Spiritual Preparation Tips to receive the most out of Trek
During our time at Martin's Cove, you will have experiences designed to help you feel the Spirit. With intentional preparation, Trek can be one of the most spiritual experiences in your life.
As President Varner said in his Trek Kickoff Fireside address: "Trek is like a Debit Card. You will get out of Trek what you put into it. If you only put "$5" in, you will have a $5 experience. If you take your preparation seriously, and put "$1 Million" in, you will have a "Million Dollar" experience."
Spiritual Prep:
Attend your Church Meetings:
Sunday Service
Seminary
Mutual
Pray Daily - Come with a Question:
We invite you to bring a question you would like direction on. These next 5 to 10 years are filled with major decisions that will leave a big impact on how you live your life. Our Heavenly Father has the answers you seek! He has a message for YOU. If you allow yourself to have the Faith to ask, Obedience to listen, and the Discipline to learn how the Spirit speaks to you, you will hear Him as you attend Trek!
Study the Scriptures/Pioneer Stories:
Questions you might ask yourself as you read about your Pioneer or other stories you come across:
What was this person leaving behind?
How did they 'Look unto Christ'?
What gospel principles were taught and/or learned?
How are your challenges different or similar?
How do their experiences and outcomes encourage you?
Find an Angel - Identify Pioneers in your own Family
"A pioneer is one who goes before, preparing the way for others to follow."
Whether you have an ancestor who crossed the plains with the Saints, or you are the first member of the Church in your family, everyone has a pioneer heritage that they can honor. Learning about your personal pioneers will help Trek take on more meaning.
Take advantage of the opportunity to find a Pioneer Ancestor through Family Search! This is the person you will walk for. Research and learn about them, other pioneer ancestors, or those who came before you who converted to the gospel and made it possible for you to have the gospel in your life.
See an Angel - "Eyes to see"
Pray for the eyes to see the Angels that Heavenly Father puts in your path. This will help you develop a grateful attitude and inspire you to pay it forward!
Be an Angel - Attend the Temple & Serve
Take a family name to the Temple at least once before June!
In your Home, Wards, or Community, seek for ways you can lighten someone's load.
Keep a Journal
Write down your thoughts as you prepare for the Trek (think about your own life, your challenges, and parallels you find to the early Saints).
You will be given a notebook to bring with you on the Trek where you can write your experiences as you go. Include the mundane as well as the spiritual; sketch the scenery; write about your physical challenges, the food, and sleeping arrangements, and about the things spoken to your heart!
Physical Prep:
We suggest that you begin walking 3 times a week, at least 1-2 miles each time. As your cardiovascular endurance increases, it would be ideal to increase your time and distance. Over the next couple months, work towards walking 3-5 miles at one time, at least once during the week.
Switch it up!
The terrain that we will hike will include up and down hills. We suggest when opportunity permits you vary your walking routine to include different levels of difficulty. This will help to condition your body and heart for any challenge we will face on the Trek.
If you do not already have hiking boots or rugged athletic shoes, now is the time to start looking to purchase a pair. By May, you should have secured comfortable hiking boots or rugged athletic shoes, and also begin wearing them on your walk once per week. This way they will be properly worn in by June!
**Parents & Youth Leaders**
Please help the Youth make a fitness goals and find ways that you might check on their progress and encourage their success. This could include pairing up with a fitness buddy, planning some day/evening hikes as the weather improves in the Spring for mutual activities, or creating a Ward Walking Group! We want everyone to have a positive experience, and being prepared is the first step in that direction.
